Links Literacy Program

The San Antonio Chapter of The Links, Incorporated has been recognized as a 2020 Best Practices Chapter for the program “Literate City USA: Literate People, Literary Community.”

Program Mission: To promote literacy and positive associations with reading in the African-American community, in a way that builds brand identity for The Links as a promoter of literacy initiatives.

Goal #1: To encourage each middle school student attending the Boys & Girls Club Eastside Branch to read at least one book more than they did in the prior program year, for two consecutive program years. The recommended/provided books should be age-appropriate and feature characters of various ethnicities.

Goal #2: Host at least one public event focusing on written works by African American authors.

This year’s book that will used at the Boys & Girls Club Eastside Branch is “Harbor Me,” – A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Jacqueline Woodson’s first middle-grade novel since National Book Award winner Brown Girl Dreaming celebrates the healing that can occur when a group of students share their
stories.
